Lori’s Journey to Figure & Fitness Competitions!

Between my senior year of high school and the end of my first year of college, I had gained 40 pounds!

HOW? WHY?

I was an athlete growing up, involved in gymnastics from the age of 5 through my senior year of high school, a cheerleader, and ran the 100m and 4x100m relay in track and field! How did this happen? I felt awful!

The reason was simple, I was less active and was eating more ( of the wrong foods)! I took responsibility by educating myself about exercise and proper nutrition. I started to run at my high school track! Believe me, long-distance running was never my ‘cup of tea’ as I was a sprinter, but, I started with one lap! Then, I started to incorporate workout videos that incorporated a little resistance training. After one particular workout video, I was flipping through the channels when I came across a fitness and physique competition. As a gymnast, I loved the floor event, so this certainly piqued my interest! As I continued to watch these girls perform a combination of dance, gymnastics, and impressive strength movements, they then transitioned to the physique or figure competition phase. These girls had beautiful, athletic physiques. At that moment I thought, I can do this, I want to do this! Eight years later, I did!

Within those eight years, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Kinesiology, interned and worked for New England’s leading corporate fitness company-Fitcorp- in Boston, moved back home due to debilitating panic attacks, learned to manage those attacks, became the Director of Personal Training and Internship Coordinator for Gold’s Gym of Eau Claire, and had lost that 40lbs! It was time to take my fitness goal to the next level and accomplish what I said I could, and would, do eight years earlier- enter a figure competition!

In the fall of 2003, I started to research and train for the Minnesota 10, 000 Lakes NANBF figure competition set for spring of 2004. I was excited, but, to be completely honest, I was more terrified! I was terrified at the thought of, “what if I have a panic attack back stage, or worse yet, ON STAGE?” One week out from my competition I would have moments of extreme excitement, “I can’t wait to step on stage!” to “What the heck am I doing?” I’m about to get on stage in a two-piece suit and 5-inch heels? WHAT?!”

Finally, the day arrived and I still had the same thoughts and emotions, but, I knew I had worked hard, felt great, and I was ready to rock the suit and high heels! My mindset was, ‘no matter the outcome…you did it! You learned so much about the journey, about yourself, so, go show it off and have fun!’

I’ll never forget the initial moments of stepping on stage with a group of women who worked hard and shared the same passion! It was surreal! Liberating! Fun! After the first set of quarter turns, I came back to reality and realized- I’m doing this! This is fun! Before I knew it, we were ushered off stage. The girls in my class were congratulating one another and giving ‘high-fives’! I couldn’t wait to step back onstage for the individual walk, the T-walk! I think I knew at that moment I had the ‘ competition bug’! The T-Walk was just as amazing, I definitely felt more comfortable and had fun! Finally, it was time for the placings! I kept telling myself if I don’t place, it’s ok- you did it! However, I am competitive and I was just hoping to place top 5. I placed 3rd! I was ecstatic! Shortly after the show, I ran into the head judge. He said, “Congratulations! You did a great job! This was your first show, correct?” I replied, “Thank you! Yes, it was!” He replied, ” Keep at it, you have a great future in this sport!” I almost fell over! Confirmed, I had the competition bug!

Within a few weeks of my first competition, I started to train for the USA Super Pro- Qualifier in Chicago set for October of the same year. This time I would add Xtreme Fit to the ‘mix’ – a fitness routine. It had been almost a decade since I had competed in a gymnastics floor event, let alone, doing an aerial cartwheel and back-handspring, but I was excited! I hired a choreographer and before I knew it, I had a solid routine that I felt confident with! I placed first in the figure short class and first in Xtreme Fit! I decided to take a few more weeks off and then started training for a 2005 Spring show in Appleton, WI. I did not place at this show and I knew I had not given 100% which felt awful! Lesson learned! This is when I realized how important an off-season was! I took several months off to mentally reboot, tweak my workouts, and learn more about nutrition and supplementation.

Spring of 2006, I competed in the NANBF’s largest mid-west show, The Southern States Classic in Kansas City, MO. The competition was definitely tougher which, I appreciated, I wanted to see how I could compete. I did not place top 5, but, when I received the judges’ notes and the placings, there were 12+ in my class, I placed 6th! I was excited to see I was so close but, I also, I WAS SO CLOSE! This did not deter me, I wanted to push further! Shortly after this show, I learned of a fitness camp called F.E.M Camp, created and hosted by one of my fitness mentors, Monica Brant (Monica is an IFBB Figure & Fitness competitor who won the 1998 Fitness Olympia and has competed in 9 Olympia’s. In 2013, she won the WBFF World Pro Figure Championship. She has graced the cover of over 100 international magazine covers including Muscle & Fitness, Muscle & Fitness Hers, and Oxygen). I knew I had, and wanted to, take advantage of this opportunity if I wanted to take it to the next level in the competition world! Plus, it would be fun!! At F.E.M camp, Monica, and her coach and nutritionist, at the time, Kim Oddo ( Kim is one of the top trainers and nutritionists in the world with over 25 years of experience. He is responsible for transforming the physique of over 100 competitors at Joe Weider’s Olympia), took us through workouts at Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach, CA. We also had a posing session and instruction (in which I was presented first place for posing- EEEK! I couldn’t believe it and it was certainly a highlight for me at camp), and discussed nutrition, more specifically, the healthy approach for figure competitors. We learned of the entertainment side of the industry, presented by, Kim Lyons, also an IFBB competitor and, at the time, the trainer who replaced Jillian Michaels on season 3 of The Biggest Loser and competed against her on season 4! Needless, to say, it was a ton of fun, informative, inspirational, and motivational weekend. I knew I would be hiring Kim Oddo for my next competition!

In the early fall of 2006, I had my sights set on the NANBF’s MR./MS. MN Natural in Bloomington, MN. I wanted to take it to the next level, so I contacted Kim Oddo! I had connected with his healthy approach to competition, and, of course, his amazing credentials. I’ll never forget our first phone consultation! It was informative and motivational, and he made me feel like I was his next client ready to take it to the top! He did not ‘sugar-coat’ things, got straight to the point, and left me feeling,’ I’ve totally got this!’ I had the best workout ‘EVER’ after that phone consultation! Kim’s workouts, nutrition plan, education, guidance, and accountability were invaluable! In the spring of 2017, I competed in the NANBF’s Mr./Ms. MN Natural and placed first in the short class which allowed me to compete in the overall division. I did not take overall but I was completely ok with that! I was happy with my standing. Kim, wanted me to call him to give him the results. I called and reported the standings, he was so proud! In addition to that, he was with my mentor, Monica Brant at the time, so, I was able to speak with her about my experience of the show! I’ll never forget her excitement for me! The ‘cherry on top’, my fiance, Brent, proposed to me that night! Everything just fell into place! Needless to say, this is, and will always be, my most favorite show to compete in!

I competed, once again, in the Southern States Classic in Kansas, City and placed 2nd in figure short class, and then 2nd place, figure short class in the Mr./Ms. MN Natural. I hired Kim once again for off-and-on-season for a new sanction, NPC in 2010. I was nervous and excited because it was new sanction, not drug tested. I ended up placing first in my class and qualifying for Jr. Nationals. I couldn’t believe it!

2010 presented the beginning of many family events, life, and business changes. I knew if I were to compete in Jr. Nationals and beyond, I needed to really focus on that. Family, and my own well-being, came first. So, in 2010, I started TEAM ASPIRE and began training women for the figure and bikini competition. It has been so fun and rewarding working with these women and being part of their transformation and journey!
